are you unreachable by God This story's almost too over-the-top, completely ridiculous, "what are the odds it could happen?", to believe. God time and again shows that no one is out of his reach. No matter who you are or what you've done, God still pursues you. Of course if you don't believe me, you can listen to Tom talk about his experiences with drugs, the occult, and God.
chasing after lonely hearts Sometimes when I look at the world, I don't see it as busy or angry or bored or exciting. I see it as lonely. That's what I think when I see a video like this. People are so desperate to be loved, that they'll do and believe anything. (And yes, I realize that some people believe Christians are the same way. But that's a discussion for a different topic.)
worshiping an idol I struggle with football because I love it so much. There are few things (maybe nothing) that I get more excited about than football. I’m so passionate that I physically feel the anguish with the Steelers lose. Which they did this weekend. I’ve wondered if loving football is a sin. And I think for me, at least, football is a sin. Not because football itself is evil. But because I...
What to do when the world fights back If there’s a section in the Bible that I really struggle with, it’s the timeline that surrounds Jesus’ trial. In those hours Jesus meets with pretty much the movers and shakers of the Jewish and Roman worlds. We know that Jesus was a powerful speaker, we know that he performed miracles, we know that he had wisdom to surprise (and sometimes shame) his opponents. Yet in the most important...
The Unfair Treatment of Ben Roethlisberger The following is a post I made on a Steelers football blog. It seemed more appropriate there, than here. However, it was deemed "too religious" to stay there, so they deleted it. No hard feelings on my part. But more on the experience next week. In the meantime, I thought it was too good to end up in the delete bin of some random server. So here you go.... This is one of those posts that...
a return to R3blog
By e. barrett | Posted on 09-03-2010
Well friends, I’ve been holding off on coming back to R3blog for a bit longer than I had intended. It’s partly because I’ve just been exhausted. Too much going on in not enough time. The creative juices just aren’t flowing without some rest. But there’s been another reason… for a while now, I’ve been trying to figure out what to do about R3blog. I thought at first it needed a redesign (which it did). But that wasn’t enough. It needed something else. So I’ve been working on that “something else.” I’d love to fill you in on the details, but frankly, I don’t have them yet. I’m not even sure what that something else looks like. And pretty much every day, I change my mind. Don’t worry though. R3blog is not going anywhere. There will still be...

a few weeks rest
By e. barrett | Posted on 07-15-2010
Hey friends, I’m taking a few weeks break starting today from R3blog.net. Don’t worry. This isn’t your typical “I’m taking a break and never coming back” thing that happens a lot on the internet. Instead I’m getting married. Life has been very hectic for my soon-t0-be-wife and I. And I’ve been praying a lot about how to handle all the stresses that come with major life change like getting married. Each time I think about it, I’m reminded that God calls us to rest. And that’s simply been something I haven’t done much of lately. So now it’s time for me to rest. Enjoy married life. And come back to R3 with some renewed energy! I look forward to seeing you all in the middle of August! eb

an heir to the kingdom
By e. barrett | Posted on 07-09-2010
Recently I mentioned that each of us is a child of God. But that means more than just getting gifts and behaving like kids. In fact, it comes with a whole lot of responsibility. When we become a child of God, we actually become heirs to God’s Kingdom. Think about what that means. It’s a big deal to be an heir. It means we need to have responsibility. It also means we need to understand how things work. A CEO can’t run an organization if he or she doesn’t understand the basics of the business. Presidents can’t “run” a government if they don’t know the laws and troubles facing their land. Paul in a letter to the Galatians says we “are no longer a slave but God’s own child. And since you are his child, God has made you his heir.” Slaves didn’t know how to...

how to make decisions
By e. barrett | Posted on 07-07-2010
My life has never been more stressful. I’m working three jobs, getting married, buying a house, moving and it’s all of that has happened in the last 2 months. And a cancer scare for my fiancée. And did I mention I have paid for the wedding, honey moon, engagement rings and down payment on the house. Oh yeah, I was also unemployed for 11 months last year. To say that things are busy and stressful would be an understatement. Most days I’ve handled things really well. For the sheer level of stress and fatigue I’m dealing with, I’d say things are going great. But there are some days when it feels completely overwhelming (like today). It’s on these overwhelming days where I’m emotionally, physically, and spiritually exhausted. But I’ve realized something in the midst...

Natalie Grant in concert
By e. barrett | Posted on 07-02-2010
I’m a little tired today. Life has been busy. I’m getting married in 2 weeks. And I just finished moving all my stuff into the house I bought a couple of weeks ago. But that’s not why I’m tired today. I’m tired because I only got 6 hours of sleep. And for a change it wasn’t because I was working. Instead, I had the chance to hear Natalie Grant in concert (at the Festival of the Bells). The venue was in a smaller, rural town that’s been hit very hard by the recession. I’m sure she could have played in other, bigger venues. Probably with a lot more energetic of an audience. But she encouraged a lot of people last night. In a town that hasn’t had a lot of good news recently. Now I don’t go to a lot of concerts, but every time I go to a Christian concert...

what does it mean to be a child of God?
By e. barrett | Posted on 06-30-2010
“…we are God’s children. And since we are his children, we are his heirs. In fact, together with Christ we are heirs of God’s glory. But if we are to share his glory, we must also share his suffering.” Have you ever stopped to think about what it means to be a child of God? For me this is a difficult thing to wrap my mind around. Not because I can’t understand God adopting us into his family, but because when I hear that phrase I immediately think of people doing cheesy Christian things (like bumper stickers that say “honk if you love Jesus.”) In my mind, the phrase “child of God” has almost been hijacked by well-intentioned, but people who are a little creepy and who behave strangely while dressing in 1970’s clothing. I doubt I’m alone. But when we stop...

finding God’s will for your life
By e. barrett | Posted on 06-21-2010
Have you ever asked yourself what God’s will is for your life? I don’t know if this is an American thing or it’s something all believers struggle with. (I’d be curious to hear what our non-American R3blog readers think.) At any rate, at least in this country we spend much of our time searching for God’s will for our lives. Culturally we see the world through something like Manifest Destiny. Where we feel that there’s a purpose to our lives. Where there’s something specific to take from live. This is such a strong current of our culture that understanding “our purpose” is something I focus on professionally. Almost every worker is searching for the meaning of their work. And our search for our Meaning to Work has become a billion dollar industry. (Of which...

are we actually good people?
By e. barrett | Posted on 06-18-2010
If you wanted to change software on your work computer, how many people would you need to help you? Go ahead and think about it for a moment. If you’re lucky you can do it yourself. For most of us in the corporate world we don’t have that luxury. (For me it would be three to five people depending on what I was doing.) Why does it take that many people? Because we live in a fallen world. In other words, a world filled with people who don’t always do the right thing. Ironically most of us gloss over this fact. We think we’re “good people” and the only “terrible people” are the ones who commit murders and crimes. And even then, some of us might argue, it’s only because they had bad childhoods or were picked on as kids. (Of course if that’s the case doesn’t...

fearing life
By e. barrett | Posted on 06-14-2010
We are consumed and paralyzed with fear. We buy fire insurance, life insurance, health insurance, flood insurance, pest insurance. We have people inspect our homes for radon, formaldehyde, and lead. We child proof our electrical outlets, put rails at the steps, install security systems, and use floodlights to illuminate the dark. Some people even go so far as to literally put their kid on a leash. Wow. Is life really that bad? Kid’s on a leash? But that’s where we find ourselves. And there’s few things more tragic than living life filled with fear. Of course there’s no question that terrible things may happen to you. It happens every day. Your house may burn down, you may get cancer, your kid might be kidnapped. These things strike terror into our hearts, because we...

created in God’s image
By e. barrett | Posted on 06-09-2010
“Then God said, ‘Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” (Genesis: 1:26) It’s easy to forget we are special. Life has a way of squeezing the joy from us. Our co-workers are often more intent on bringing us back down to their level than building us up. Our family can be more concerned with their feelings than our feelings. Even our friends can stop us from growing because they like things how they are. It seems everywhere we look the world is holding us back. God alone stands out. In fact, he has gone so far as to share his divinity with us. It’s right there in Genesis 1: 26, “Let us make man in our...
