I’d like to say that I’m home after a few weeks of travel. But I’m actually back on the road. Which is nice because where I live it’s snowing and where I am its 70 degrees. You have to love that! So while I’m on the road I want to take care of a little housekeeping and expand upon an interesting idea.

<a href="http://got-fruit.net/"title="Got-Fruit? blog" target="_blank" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/got-fruit.net');">Christopher sent in an email about the <a href="http://www.r3blog.net/2008/11/03/king-of-the-hill/"title="related post: king of the hill" target="_blank" >king of the hill post.

The part of your post that I really wanted to comment on though is about being an individual and learning to submit to authority. From my own experiences in Christ, I have to say that once we do start to practice submitting to authority for the sake of the Lord, it has been for me, another one of those new found freedoms in Christ that you begin to experience. You’re no longer weighed down by thoughts and feelings to “defend” your ground, or to come up with arguments of justification for your actions.

Practice. It’s something I usually don’t’ associate with living out a life of faith. But you know what? I think that’s a great way of looking at it. It’s very rare that we instantly become people who can live in perfect faith. Usually it takes weeks, if not years, to overcome some of our sinful behaviors.

I think this is one of the most dangerous times of being a Christian. When we become frustrated that we aren’t changing as fast as we should be, we run the risk of giving up. We can become so upset that we keep making the same mistake we wonder, “will I ever be able to overcome this?” It’s easy to say we’re never going to overcome our selfishness, our lust, our greed, and so we give up.

But if we look at it from a practice perspective, things change. Our weaknesses no longer become impossible to overcome. Instead they represent a chance to learn and try again. In the book, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/God-Closer-Than-You-Think/dp/0310253497/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1226957152&sr=8-1"title="Amazon: God is closer than you think" target="_blank" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/www.amazon.com');">God is closer than you think, <a href="http://www.johnortberg.com/"title="Ortberg's website" target="_blank" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/www.johnortberg.com');">John Ortberg has a prayer that simply says, “God I’m sorry I failed, please help me start again.”

God can never change our hearts if we’re running away from him because we see ourselves as failures. But he can radically change us if we keep getting back up and saying, “God, I failed, help me to stand up and try again.” This is the balance between truth and grace.

Maybe it’s true what they say: practice makes perfect.

What does a sick 3 year old, being kicked off a flight, and losing a power strip have in common? They are all things that in my two weeks of travel I never expected, and yet they were my biggest challenges.

Before I left I expected computer problems, stress, or even getting lost in some strange city to be my biggest issues. But all of those went smoothly. In fact even driving around Chicago was easy. Every single thing I worried about worked out perfectly. What I found was a sudden supply of unexpected problems! Things that had never even crossed my mind.

<a href="http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew%206:26-34&version=31"title="Matthew 6: 26-34" target="_blank" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/www.biblegateway.com');">Jesus said, “Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?” I’m not sure that point has ever been driven home more than these last few weeks.

I look back at all the stress and feel a little embarrassed by it. All of the anxiety I felt was pointless. I didn’t accomplish anything through worry. I didn’t solve any problems by being nervous. It was just a big waste of my time and energy.

I’d like to say I am cured of my need to worry. But I know that’s not really true. I think I can honestly say, however, that things are just a bit more in perspective. And isn’t that what the Christian faith is all about? Each day making a little more progress towards God.

I am very much an individualist.

All of my favorite <a href="http://orange.half-life2.com/hl2.html"title="Gordon Freeman rules" target="_blank" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/orange.half-life2.com');">games, <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088944/"title="maybe not my favorite -but it still rocks!" target="_blank" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/www.imdb.com');">movies and <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0416449/"title="300 lone men against an army. What's not to like?" target="_blank" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/www.imdb.com');">history stories involve the lone hero fighting the forces of evil (<a href="http://www.chucknorrisfacts.com/"title="I don't care if these are old, they are still funny!" target="_blank" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/www.chucknorrisfacts.com');">Chuck Norris I’m looking at you). To be honest I hate the idea that I need community to live a healthy, productive life. I don’t want to have to submit my life to other people - I want to be king of the hill.

But if I want to live out a life of faith, I need to look at everything the Bible says about my life, not just the things I’m interested in hearing. That’s why I find the Bible’s comments on authority so challenging. It directly confronts the way I want to live my life.

Yet should I be surprised? Look at what happens in the world around us.

Since 2000 we’ve been told by one political party that our current president is an idiot. Comedians re-tell that same joke as if no one has ever heard it. Companies publish calendars and cards illustrating “Bushisms.” In response, we’re told that the other political party hates their country. And hopes that things will be miserable for millions of Americans just to improve their election chances.

Of course it’s not just politics where this happens. It’s at home too. A 12 year old boy was <a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/playoffs2008/news/story?id=3643010"title="it's not even that good of a mohoawk" target="_blank" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/sports.espn.go.com');">suspended from school for wearing a mohawk to support the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. His response was essentially: “I’d rather be suspended than cut my hair.” His parents supported his decision.

Now maybe Bush isn’t the smartest President we’ve ever had. And maybe one party really does believe in redistribution of wealth. And maybe the school over reacted with a boy’s enthusiasm for his favorite team.

But is this mocking authority how we’re called to live?

We seem to “stick it to the Man” because we can. And so we cheer for the defiance of a 12 year old. And laugh at the Bush is stupid jokes. And nod knowingly that one party wants to take from the rich and give to the poor.

I don’t pretend to understand everything about how the Bible portrays authority. Maybe I don’t even know most of it. But how can we hope to learn what it means to be obedient, when as a society we intentionally mock those in authority?

Right now we find ourselves in a global economic crisis. And we’re told that we need to trust our leaders. But why should we when we’ve been told for 8 years that the president is an idiot? When we mock authority, how can we suddenly turn that attitude off when suddenly we need to trust authority?

The answer is, we can’t.

There’s a moment when <a href="http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?book_id=9&chapter=24"title="1 Samuel 24" target="_blank" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/www.biblegateway.com');">Saul is standing alone in a cave “using the facilities” so to speak. David, the man who Saul is trying to kill, is hiding in the cave. Saul had been searching for them for a long time. It would be so easy for David to end his life on the run by killing Saul. At least that’s what David’s men think.

But David believes Saul was chosen by God, and therefore has all of God’s authority. So instead of killing him, David cuts off a piece of his robe. Saul leaves without knowing how close to death he was. As Saul walks back to his soldiers, his protection, David appears, saying, “I could have killed you, but I didn’t because God chose you to be king.”

David knew that if he started ignoring God’s authority because it was convenient, he’d be walking down a dangerous path. He respected Saul’s authority so much that he’d rather live a life on the run, then counter what God might be doing through Saul. He knew he couldn’t turn his obedience on and off. That’s a very different place to be than how we seem to be living.

Like I said, the Bible’s view of authority is difficult for me to grasp. Especially as someone who prides himself on individualism. I do know that with the election in a few days, this is something we all need to wrestle with. No matter who wins the presidency, serious problems face this country and the world. And I don’t want to reject authority simply because I don’t like it. I’m committed to God, no matter where that leads me.

I want God to be my king of the hill.

In the last post, I spoke about David’s belief that God would be with him when he faced <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goliath"title="wikipedia: Goliath" target="_blank" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/en.wikipedia.org');">Goliath. He didn’t need any more evidence. He didn’t have to wait for “just one more reassurance.” He just took past experiences and applied them to his life.

Yet so often we don’t act with that same assurance. Sometimes we want to wait for absolutes before we act. We play it safe and ask, “God, should I do this, or should I do that?” Waiting until God gives us some kind of definitive answer.

Now on the one hand, this is a very valid and legitimate question to ask. It can be <a href="http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=51760"title="man drowns thinking he can walk on water like Jesus" target="_blank" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/www.worldnetdaily.com');">a very bad idea to act without knowing God is there to support you. But in many cases God has already told us to act, he doesn’t need to repeat himself. For instance, Jesus already told us to love our enemies. We don’t need to pray about whether we should love them, we just need to do it.

No matter what decisions we make, or what actions we decide to take, we must always move with God. As bold as David was, he never would have survived without God’s help. In fact, that’s the whole point of the story. David was much smaller than many of the Israelite soldiers. He was the youngest child (which Israelites viewed as ‘inferior’). If David had come up to you or I, we would have laughed at him, and said, “sure whatever kid.” He didn’t fit the mold of manly man, let alone hero.

Which is exactly why God chose him to act. No one could confuse God’s action as something David did on his own. <a href="http://www.castingcrowns.com/"title="easily one of my favorite bands" target="_blank" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/www.castingcrowns.com');">Casting Crowns sums up David’s attitude saying, “I’ll go, but I cannot go alone.” This was David’s life philosophy. He was aware that it wasn’t his own abilities that would take down Goliath (or the bear, or the lion) but it was God. He went, but he didn’t go alone.

<a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00137KH98?ie=UTF8&tag=r3-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B00137KH98"title="amazon: In Me" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/www.amazon.com');">In Me

If you ask me to leap
Out of my boat on the crashing waves
If You ask me to go
Preach to the lost world that Jesus saves
I’ll go, but I cannot go alone
Cause I know I’m nothing on my own
But the power of Christ in me makes me strong
Makes me strong

Cause when I’m weak, You make me strong
When I’m blind, You shine Your light on me
Cause I’ll never get by living on my own ability
How refreshing to know You don’t need me
How amazing to find that you want me
So I’ll stand on Your truth, and I’ll fight with Your strength
Until You bring the victory, by the power of Christ in me

If You ask me to run
And carry Your light into foreign land
If You ask me to fight
Deliver Your people from Satan’s hand

To reach out with Your hands
To learn through Your eyes
To love with the love of a savior
To feel with Your heart
And to think with Your mind
I’d give my last breath for Your glory

With God’s backing, we can accomplish anything. As David found out even giants are no match for God. Or as Peter discovered, even walking on water is possible when we live out a life of faith. What can God do with our lives, if we choose not to walk alone?

<a href="http://www.r3blog.net/about-2/"title="about R3" target="_blank" >R3 has been in existence for <a href="http://www.r3blog.net/2007/08/18/is-the-bible-real/"title="it's funny how my third post ever is one of my most popular posts..." target="_blank" >almost 1.5 years. And during that time I’ve never taken a leave of absence. The most time I’ve taken off is over the weekends, or occasionally a day or two when I’ve been sick. But all that’s about to change! For the first time since R3 started I plan on taking a few days off. Two weeks to be exact. But don’t worry. You’ll get regularly scheduled posts over the next two weeks. I have lots of content pre-written.

I’ve never been very good at taking time off from anything. Because I get bored easily, I look to keep myself occupied. Which means I tend to ignore the idea of a Sabbath. But there’s a reason God <a href="http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Exodus%2020:%208-11;&version=31;"title="Exodus 20: 8-11" target="_blank" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/www.biblegateway.com');">tells us to rest. Nothing was made to always work. Not even a website.

For me this rest will allow me to catch up on some reading. It will also let me refill my “creative well” so to speak. Those are important reasons to rest. But perhaps the most important reason is to simply see that the world goes on even if we don’t. We often talk ourselves into believing that if we stop working, the world (or perhaps just your house) will fall apart. It doesn’t. The world always goes on.

It’s comforting knowing that when I come back in two weeks, R3 will be chugging along, even without my direct supervision.

A significant part of Jesus’ ministry was spent in an <a href="http://www.bible-history.com/geography/ancient-israel/galilee.html"title="a map" target="_blank" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/www.bible-history.com');">area known as Galilee. This was a region filled mostly with non-Jews, which meant much of traditional Judaism was diluted. This posed a problem because Jews looked at Jewish culture as “what God demanded,” anything less was seen as inferior.

In many ways this made Galilee one of the “worst” parts of Israel.

My study Bible suggests it’s this brokenness that made Jesus spend so much time here. Which, to be honest, is something I hadn’t considered. But it makes sense. Jesus even said, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick” (<a href="http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew%209:%2012;&version=31;"title="Matthew 9: 12" target="_blank" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/www.biblegateway.com');">Matthew 9: 12).

It seems to me that the closer we get to disaster the more likely we are to take notice of our lives. And it’s usually here that we begin to realize there’s something wrong. I’m sure it wasn’t any different 2,000 years ago.

As Galilee struggled economically, and was looked down upon by the rest of Israel, is it any wonder why they responded so strongly to Jesus? The people of Galilee saw the problems in their world, and recognized that Jesus was presenting another option. He was giving them a new way to live. He was offering hope.

Sometimes in our prosperity we view God as a convenience (or inconvenience, I suppose, depending on your point of view). We think of him as something that we can add onto our lives. But that’s not how we were designed to live. God is supposed to be an integral part of our lives.

Greg Koukl, of <a href="http://www.str.org/site/PageServer"title="i love their apologetic oriented podcasts/radio show" target="_blank" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/www.str.org');">Stand to Reason fame, describes Jesus role in our life as a cure not a band-aid. Jesus doesn’t “cover up” sin, he takes it from us. This makes all the difference. We can’t just choose to apply God to our lives when it’s convenient or when we’re feeling sick.

That’s what the people of Galilee recognized. They saw their need for God and responded. I think it’s entirely possible that if Jesus had started in the most prosperous parts of Israel, with the healthiest people, they never would have recognized their own need for God. They would have fooled themselves into believing they needed a band-aid instead of a cure.

Sometimes the best thing for us can be a difficult life. Sometimes it pays to be Galilee.
